Sounds of a Changing Sea

Exploring the Unheard Acoustic Diversity of Mozambique’s Vulnerable Marine Habitats


This project aims to characterize spatiotemporal variation in soundscapes across coastal marine ecosystems in Bazaruto Archipelago, Mozambique (e.g., coral reefs, seagrass meadows, mangroves, sand banks, and open ocean), and test relationships between the acoustic characteristics and biophysical parameters (e.g., temperature, tides, biodiversity). These data enable us to demonstrate the potential of passive acoustic methods to monitor changes and perturbations in coastal ecosystems and will establish baseline acoustic data for the habitats in the Bazaruto Archipelago.
